Island hopping by bike

The area around Brønnøysund is known for its beautiful nature, great fishing and fantastic archipelago with thousands of islands, both big and small. This makes it especially popular with kayaking enthusiasts and cyclists who love the idea of island hopping.

“You really become one with nature here,” says the hotel manager at Thon Hotels in Brønnøysund. Both cycling and kayaking offer spectacular nature experiences.

One of the places the hotel manager recommends visiting is the Vega Islands, which are designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can experience how generations of fishermen and farmers have maintained a sustainable lifestyle based on the unique tradition of poultry farming.

Both kayaks and bicycles can be rented on site, but it is also possible to pick up a bike at the airport and start the adventure from there.

Torghatten – The mountain with a hole in it

The most famous landmark, Torghatten, is located just outside Brønnøysund on the island of Torget. The mountain is famous for the hole that goes right through it that was created during the Ice Age. The hole is no less than 160 metres wide and 35 metres high.

“It's truly a unique sight and I've never seen anything like it,” says the hotel manager. You can reach the hole on a well-marked trail that takes around 30 minutes of easy hiking.

If you've ever seen the TV series Himmelblå on NRK, you probably have a good idea about what the nature here looks like. The series was originally shot on the island of Ylvingen, which has attracted lots of visitors to the area.

The hike up to the hole in the mountain can easily be done in an afternoon. You can also hike up to the top of Torghatten and enjoy views of the archipelago.
